O’Brien wins 2nd Summer Open

The summer looks like it might have finally arrived in Ireland today but it was Benny O’Brien who won the second Summer Open in Carlow. The Kilkenny man ran out as last man standing after a long days play in the Ivy Rooms with a 3-1 victory over Carlow’s own Karl Fitzpatrick.

The open series attracted a good entry yet again with top Irish internationals Brendan O’Donoghue and John Sutton in attendance yet again. The group stages were played off first before we got down to the knockouts and the Last 16 where all the favorites progressed without any problems.

The quarters however did see a few upsets with both Colvin O’Brien and Mark Walsh exiting the event along with John Sutton at the hands of O’Donoghue. The semi’s saw Karl Fitzpatrick defeat Andrew Yeates 3-1 but it was the other semi that saw the shock result of Benny O’Brien defeating the two time Irish Champion Brendan O’Donoghue 3-1.

Benny then went on to win the final but Brendan did take home the high break prize thanks to an earlier effort of 86.
