The 6 Reds National Championship took place in Breakers Gorey on Saturday 27th April. Matches were on a round robin basis, with a point being awarded per frame won, and the top 2 after the round robin phase playing off for the title in the Final. Newcomer Emily Talbot, a 12yr old from New Institute in Nenagh performed fantastically well for her 1st tournament, taking frames off both Sandra Bryan and Michelle Sherwin. Emily has only being playing for 12 weeks, but showed the maturity of a player who has been on the circuit for years.
The final seen Breakers own Sandra Bryan taking on the reigning champion Michelle Sherwin from Q’s S.C. The 1st frame was very tight, going down to the black. Sandra had a great opportunity to take the frame; but slgihtly miscued being tight under the bottom cushion; missed the black and gave the frame to Michelle. It was close in the 2nd, when Michelle pulled off a really nice clearance of 35 from the last 2 reds to take a 2-0 lead. The 3rd frame again went down to the black; Sandra went for a tough cut into the centre to take the frame, and the black rolled around the pocket and popped back out to leave Michelle an easy pot to take a 3-0 advantage. Michelle nudged ahead in the 4th frame and kept her advantage going leaving Sandra needing a snooker on the pink. Michelle then just rolled the pink right into the jaws of the corner pocket, leaving Sandra no possability of keeping it out. The match went to Michelle 4-0. A big congratulations goes to Michelle Sherwin for winning her 3rd 6 Reds National Championship in a row. Both Ladies were presented with Genesis pieces by Breakers owner Murt Rossister, with the perpetual cup also being awarded to Michelle.
Many thanks for their wonderful hospitality once again go to Sandra and Murt from Breakers. The Ladies are now lookign forward to the National Championships next month in the Ivy Rooms in Carlow.
