Sherwin Wins Ladies Ranking Event 1

The 1st ladies ranking event took place in Newbridge CYMS on Sunday 28th September.  We would like to welcome our 3 new members, Ronda Sheldreck, Maria Murray and Katie French. Claire Mill beat Catherine Fitzsimons 3-0, winning the 1st frame well; but having to scrap and fight for the next 2 to secure her place in the semi’s.  Newcomers Maria Murray and Katie French were drawn against each other. Maria won the match, but the frames were on the black in a very close match.  It was an excellent debut for young 12yr old Katie, who played very well for her 1st competition.  Maria played Claire in the next round and although Maria eventually lost 3-0 to Claire, she showed that there is a good future for her in the game; she got better as the day went on, and her long game was outstanding.

The other half of the draw Michelle French played newcomer Ronda Sheldreck, who had made her RIBSA debut the day before in the 1st intermediate tournament in Finglas. Michelle narrowly won the 1st frame, and Ronda was on for tying the match at 1-1, when she snookered herself on the yellow, the advantage swung back in Michelle’s favour and she closed out the frame to go 2-0 ahead. Michelle went on to win the next frame and take the match, but again this was a great first showing for Ronda in a ladies event. Michelle played Michelle Sherwin in the semi-final.  She never really got into the match, and although she didn’t play well, Sherwin was consistent enough to win the match 3-0.

The 1st frame of the final was too close to call throughout, with Michelle 7 ahead on the black; Claire potted a fantastic long black but went in off into the green pocket to give Michelle the frame.  Michelle won the next frame comfortably; when Claire had to concede the match due to a back strain. Congratulations to Michelle on winning the 1st ranking event of the season and retaining her number 1 ranking.  A big thanks goes to Leo and everyone at Newbridge CYMS for all of their help and the use of their fantastic facilities once again.
