Stephen Byrne won the second Intermediate Event in the Eastern region beating No.2 seed Chris Hannigan 3-2 in the final. A total of 19 players took part on the day but it was Byrne who ran out the eventual winner beating Unesh Bhagwan, Wayne Doyle and Alan Cusak on the way to the final.
Byrne however nearly didn’t make it past the Last 16 as he was brought all the way to 3-2 by Umesh Bhagwan to the final black but he then went on to defeat the then No.1 Wayne Doyle by three frames to one to progress to the semi’s. The semi’s saw him defeat Alan Cusak 3-0 to reach the final while in the other half of the draw the No.2 seed Hannigan had some great wins including a 3-0 victory over Philip Browne knocking in the high break of the day, a 52 break along the way.
He then went on to send Stephen O’Reilly out of the event and then beat Brendan Murphy 3-1 in the semi’s to set up the clash with Bryne. It was certainly the two form players of the day in the final and it was Byrne who eventually ran out the victor 3-2 after a long days play. Hannigan however now moves to the No.1 spot as the Intermediate series moves onto the next venue.
All in all a good days snooker in Crossguns and I would like to thank Finbar Ruane for all his help on the day and for the numerous cups of coffee he provided me with, much needed!.
