Masters team of Stephen Merrigan and Ernie McMullen continued their great form in the European Masters team snooker championship here in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Yesterday Ireland 2 had their second win in a row when they beat Israel 2 matches to nil. In the Match Stephen won 3-1 and Ernie won 3-0.
Today they faced one of the favourites for the Title in a very strong Welsh team. In the Match Stephen Merrigan played former pro Darren Morgan and the Dubliner really put it up against Morgan with breaks of 48 and 39 in the first two frames only for Morgan to make a 64 Clearance to steal the first and Merrigan fought back to win the second frame.
In the third Merrigan led by 37 with three reds, only for Morgan again to snatch it again with a superb clearance to win on the black. In the fourth frame again Merrigan stood up to the pressure only to lose it on the black.
In the other match Ernie played Alfred Evans and the Welsh player was very strong with breaks of 108, 92 to win 3-0.
After the disappointment of the Welsh match the team regained tier confidence to beat France 2 matches to nil with McMullen winning a final frame decider after Merrigan had earlier won 3-1.
They now sit in the group with three wins out of four matches played
Ireland 2 will play Bulgaria at 8.00am tomorrow Irish Time with their final group match against Russia at 1pm Irish time.
