LADIES RANKING EVENT NO. 1 7/10/12 CELBRIDGE

The 1st ladies ranking event took place in Celbridge on Sunday 7/10/12. Irish Pool Champ Sandra Bryan from Breakers S.C.,Gorey took on Treasa Keegan from Celbridge S.C.  These two had mammoth matches last season, almost all their matches going to the final few balls in the final frame.

Today however, sandra was on top form and ran away an easy winner of the match 3-0 to set up a semi-final clash with current number 2 Claire Mill. Sandra raced into a 2-0 lead, and almost won the match on the 3rd frame on the black when Claire nearly went in off into the centre sack, but was fortunate enough to leave Sandra an awkward safety.

On her next shot Claire was left a long black, and she showed no sign of nerves when she got down and slotted the black right into the centre of the green pocket to keep herself in the match.  Sandra had a 31 point lead in frame 4 with 2 reds remaining, when Claire laid 2 excellent snookers to get herself back into the frame, and she took most of the remaining balls to win the frame and level the match at 2-2.  Claire got off to a good start in the final frame, and managed to slightly extend her lead with almost every visit to the table.  Claire ran out a comfortable winner of the frame to finally win the match 3-2.

The other semi-final seen Michelle French take on number 1 Michelle Sherwin.  Michelle French’s daughter Katie had done the draw and had yet again set up a semi-final match between these 2. Michelle was the only player to have taken a frame off the Irish number 1 last season. sherwin took a 1st scrappy frame, and in the 2nd french had a great opportunity to level the match being 3 up with just pink on,but Sherwin managed to clear the final 2 balls to take the frame.  In the 3rd frame Sherwin hit top form, scoring at almost every visit to the table, to comfortably win the match 3-0, and set up yet another final with Claire Mill.

This was a classic final with both players playing at the top of their game, there was little to choose between them for the whole match. Michelle won the 1st frame comfortably with a 31 break.Claire showed some brilliant matchplay in the 2nd frame to win it and tie the score at 1-1. It was neck and neck throughout the 3rd frame and both players missed a few chances at the final black due to the tension. Michelle finally took a nice black into the centre to take the lead. The 4th frame was also a tight affair which could have gone either way but Michelle showed why she is the current number 1 by tightening up the game and playing some excellent tactical snooker to keep her nose ahead throughout the frame and win the match by 3-1.

Many thanks to James, Liam and Ray and not forgetting Phil at celbridge for their support.

The ladies would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Michelle Sherwin on winning her 8th National Title 4-0 against Claire Mill last season. This is the most times anybody has won the title in the history of ladies snooker in Ireland. Well done Michelle!!
