Second win of the season for Darren Ryan

The fifth handicap tournament of the season was played at Carlow on Sunday, 7th of February 2010.

Proving that winning the third tournament of the season in November was no flash-in-the-pan success, relative Billiards newcomer Darren Ryan (Celbridge) claimed the fifth round of the series with closely contested games in all his matches.

In the top half of the draw, Joe Doheny (Borris-in-Ossory) and Robert McCrum (Dublin) claimed their places in the semi final, Joe with solid wins over Phil Martin and Brendan Devlin (both Celbridge) while Robert had a good win over fourth round winner Tommy Denieffe (Kilkenny). Joe continued the good form he had shown in his earlier rounds by taking a decisive win over Robert in the semi final.

By comparison with the top half of the draw, the bottom half produced the closest games of the day when Darren Ryan (Celbridge) won his pre quarters match 400-393 against Aonghus McAnally (Portmarnock) and his quarter final 400-347 against Larry Drennan (Kilkenny) while the other semi finalist, Victor O’Gorman (Dun Laoghaire) narrowly defeated Kevin Christie (Dublin) by a margin of 13 points. The semi final, in keeping with the earlier matches in this half of the draw, was a closely fought tussle, Darren taking the match by 37 points at the finish.

The Final turned out to be a well-measured game where Joe set about redressing the fairly significant start he was giving to Darren. Darren, however, kept the pressure on Joe, including a couple of 30-plus breaks, based mainly on accurate potting, making the game of catch-up all the more difficult for Joe. Although Joe steadily reduced the deficit throughout the game, he could not quite overcome Darren’s counter attacks and had to accept that Sunday was Darren’s day.

The next Billiards Handicap round of the season will be the Pat O’Sullivan Memorial event on Sunday, 21st February 2010, to be held at The Ivy Rooms, Carlow, which is a change from the published venue.

Entries will be accepted before 10.30am on the morning of the event.
