Anthony Bonnar makes Irish team

One of Donegal’s most successful snooker players Anthony Bonnar has soared to new heights this week when he will represent Ireland in the European Championships in Malta. Anthony who has won the Donegal Championships on more occasions than anyone else, 7 times, is considered to be the most successful and consistent snooker player that Donegal has ever produced.

Anthony who has been selected for the over 40’s Irish team to travel to Malta next week has been playing on the green baize since he was 14 years of age.

In his twenties Anthony was ranked as high as No6 in the national rankings but for the last decade he concentrated on building up the family business (Bonnar Engineering Ltd). Now that things have got a little quieter he has time to play more snooker and has risen through the ranks of the over 40’s to reach No4 in his first year back on the national scene. Anthony says that he is looking forward to playing for Ireland and he hopes he will do his country and club proud in Malta.

Ireland has a strong team going to this year’s European Championship’s in Malta, there are a total of 19 players. 6 players in the men’s, 4 in the masters, 4 in the under 19’s, 2 in the ladies and 3 in the Billiards. There will also be a large number of supporters travelling with the team.

There are 5 referees travelling with the Irish team, 3 of which are from the North West snooker club in Letterkenny. Bernard Mc Guinness who is a referee’s Tutor has been asked to do head referee at the event, and he will be supported by John Doherty (grade 1 referee) who is the owner of the North West snooker club and Peter O Brien (grade 2 referee). With Anthony Bonnar and the three referee’s the north west will be well represented.
