The Republic of Ireland Billiards and Snooker Association have announced this week that they have secured the running of the World Under 21 snooker championships, which will be held from 31st July to 11th August in the North West Snooker Club, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.
This tournament, which is the biggest event for juniors on the world calendar, will attract players from all over the world. These players are the best of the best in their respective countries and are the future of professional snooker worldwide.
There will be 80 entries in the tournament and along with referees, officials and delegates, the total numbers for the event will be 150/170. Add to that the fact that many will bring family, friends, coaches and managers the total influx of visitors to the town of Letterkenny could be up to 400 people.
The tournament will be run in groups in the early stages - ten groups with eight in each group. These group stages will be run over the first week and then the top players from the groups will form the Last 32 and it will be knockout from then on. The knockout stages will take four days to complete. The eventual winner will receive a prize of €4000 and a place on the professional WSA main tour for next year but most importantly, the title of “IBSF WORLD UNDER 21 SNOOKER CHAMPION”. Former holders of this title include Ireland’s own Ken Doherty, China’s Ding Jun Hui, England’s Ronnie O Sullivan, Mark Allen from Northern Ireland and the new WSA World Champion, Neil Robertson from Australia.
The total cost of running an event of this magnitude will be around €50,000, which includes a prize fund of €10,000. This will have to be raised by RIBSA and the local tournament organizers John Doherty and Bernard McGuinness and their team.
This is a huge undertaking in the current economic climate but the organizers believe it will be worth the effort if it brings an extra 400 tourists to the town for the fortnight.
The Republic of Ireland Billiards and Snooker Association and the North West Snooker Club has been working on this project for the past four months in conjunction with the International Billiards and Snooker Federation.
The North West Snooker Club have this week received confirmation that they have been successful in their bid despite stiff competition from other countries including Russia, Israel and China, where the sport is growing rapidly.
There will be a strong entry from the Irish players who will have home advantage. There will be several Irish players hoping to do well in the championships such as No. 1 seed in the current rankings David Cassidy from Cork and the 2010 National Champion Greg Casey, also from Cork. Vincent Muldoon and Sean Conway from Mayo will also be contenders.
Local interest will focus on North West’s Snooker Club’s Gareth Boyle. Gareth has not played on the national scene this year due to his studies in Galway University but the organisers have been given a wild card and they have nominated Gareth for the place. Gareth says he is delighted to have the opportunity to represent Ireland again and will be practising hard for the next three months to do his club and Letterkenny proud. Ireland will be allowed to enter eight players in the World Under 21 Championship as the host nation.
The North West Snooker Club is celebrating 25 years in business this year and what better way to celebrate than having the opportunity to run this World Event in the club. John Doherty, club owner and Tournament Director, said “I am looking forward to hosting this fantastic event and I hope the local Council, Chamber of Commerce and all the businesses of the town will get behind us to make this tournament one that all the visitors will remember for a long time to come”.
Any further information required about the World Under 21 Snooker Championships can be obtained from John Doherty at the North West Snooker Club 074 91 21384 or from Bernard McGuinness on 086 2480794. Indeed, anyone is free to call to the snooker club at any time to view the facilities and the tournament itself when it begins, free of charge.
John Doherty,
Vice Chairman R.I.B.S.A.
North West Snooker Club.
