LETTER FROM RIBSA CHAIRMAN & NOTICE OF THE 2017 AGM
This year’s Republic Of Ireland Billiards & Snooker Association AGM will commence at 1:30pm on Saturday 6th of May in the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club Carlow.
I urge all players, parents, coaches, referees, officials and interested parties that love the games of Billiards and snooker to make every effort to attend.
I know there are a lot of members and supporters of our association that have new ideas, fresh thoughts and the enthusiasm to carry through with any changes that they feel are necessary. Why not put YOUR name forward for the committee?
We all know that committees are there to be blamed for every little thing that goes wrong even though they give up their time and efforts with virtually no remuneration.
RIBSA need a committee that is dedicated and hard working and can put more time into any new ideas that are proposed for the benefit of all members.
So don't sit on the sidelines and complain, get your voices heard by getting yourself proposed and seconded onto the committee and let’s make this association stronger than it has ever been and the envy of the World.

The annual Billiards International North-South Challenge Tournament took place at the Premier Snooker Club, Glengormley on Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd April 2017. The format of the event was that each team of eight was divided into two groups of four, so that each player met four opponents from his corresponding group, with the consequence that all benefited from the variety of games the format provided.
Play started at 10.30 on Saturday morning, the first session producing the first shock of the day when the Northern team took a clean sweep 8-0. The Southern team fared no better in the second session, the Northern team again taking a clean sweep 8-0. When the third session produced a 6½-1½result in favour of the North the writing was very clearly on the wall for the visiting Southern team. The fourth session, which wrapped up Saturday’s play, produced a 5-3 result for the home team, depriving the Southern team of any sessional win in the first day’s play.
When play resumed on Sunday morning there was a hint of a revival of form for the Southern players when they took the first session 6-2. The next session was shared 4-4, assuring the Northern side of the 2017 title with two sessions to spare. As though to underline their dominance of this year’s event, the Northern side took each of the final two sessions of the tournament 5-3.
Our thanks are due to Premier Snooker Club, Glengormley for the excellent playing facilities they provided and for the welcome they extended to the players all of which did so much to contribute to the success of the tournament.
Congratulations to the Northern team on a well-deserved victory and commiserations to the South whose play was perhaps not justly reflected in the final score line.

The ladies intermediate championships was held in Newbridge CYWMS on Sunday April 23rd. A “round robin” format was agreed and Rhonda Sheldreck won her first 3 frames and could not be caught. It was between Leah Brady and Tanya O’Neill to decide who would face Rhonda in the final. Leah won the first frame with some excellent potting, so the pressure was on Tanya in the second frame which she had to win, to stay in the championships. With some very good potting and safety play and with “Lady luck” on her side she won the frame to finish level on points with Leah.
A one frame shoot-out would decide if Tanya or Leah would progress to the final. Leah got off to a good star in the shoot-out frame and built up a commanding lead. Tanya was not giving up without a fight and slowly reduced the lead and when she fluked the Blue she went 2 points in front on the pink. Leah potted a terrific quarter ball pink to a middle pocket. She was unlucky to leave a very thin cut on the Black with the full length of the table between cue-ball and object ball. There was no easy safety shot and she felt she had to go for it. But with the cue-ball touching the top cushion, it was a very difficult pot to attempt, unfortunately she imparted some unwanted side which threw the cue-ball slightly off course and missed the black.
Very unlucky Leah, you are a terrific potter and next season you will be a force to be reckoned with. Well done to Rhonda and Tanya who will contest this year’s Ladies intermediate snooker final on finals weekend.
This competition was played in a very friendly and cordial atmosphere throughout and one incident I witnessed, occurred in the first frame between Leah and Tanya. Tanya needed a snooker on the Brown and when she saw Leah was cueing at the Blue, she stopped her from committing a foul and told her the Brown was the ball “on”.
It was great to see such sporting behaviour.
A big thank you to Newbridge CYWMS for the use of their excellent facilities, thanks to the girls for a terrific competition and I look forward to seeing you all again next season.
