The three RIBSA Referees had a very successful IBSF Snooker Championship in Daugavpils Latvia last week. Ger Murray, Neil Shanahan and Breda Doherty who was refereeing in his first senior World Championships did an excellent job representing our Association
All three received a Certificate of achievement during the Closing Ceremony and were congratulated by the IBSF organising team for a excellent performance throughout the Championship. This year Jan Verhaas from World Snooker was invited by the IBSF to observe and tutor the IBSF Referees.
The three New World Champions were crowned tonight in the 2013 IBSF World Snooker Championship here in Daugavpils Latvia. China , Belgium and Thailand players won the event in what was one of the highest quality World Championships ever held. Our Irish players were beaten by the eventual winners in the Mens and Masters events.
Phisit Chandsri (Thailand) whitewashed Glen Wilkinson of Australia 6-0 to lift the world title (40+) in his début world championship.
He was focused, determined and converted all opportunities on time to keep a control on entire match while Glen was constantly losing his grounds in the match despite giving good start in some of the frames while Phisit kept scoring in crucial moments to raise the lead after each frame to seal the match one-sided 6-0.
Delighted Chandsri who beat our own Mark Tuite in the Q-Finals was delighted with the win.
Windy Jans proves her supremacy once again by successfully defending her title against tough challenge from debuting Chunxia Shi of China. She beat Shi 5-3 in a tightly contested final to retain her title.
Wendy gave a windy start to take away 3 frames at a cost of one. She also had two breaks of 41 and 46 points in that process. Mute spectator Shi got into the game after that and played magnificent shots to counter Wendy's lead. Sooner Shi reached at 3-all stage.
Wendy had sensed the danger on time and put in her all experience to pocket next frame to step ahead. The next frame was also tough and Wendy made some mistakes but controlled on time to grab the title once again before Shi could do anything.
Zhou Yuelong of China became the World Champion defeating his compatriot Zhao Xintong 8-4 in the final player here at Daugavpils, Latvia. Zhou had beaten our own Brendan O Donoghue and David Hogan along the way to the title.
President Jim Leacy IBSF congratulated them all on their world title success and hailed the championships a major success in Latvia.
