Thursday the 19th of September signals the return of the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) Cork snooker league action. For what seemed like an eternity with the absence of snooker on Leeside, now Cork will transform into non-stop snooker and billiards action from September to May, with two divisions bustling with top talented players and many other events en-route this season including the usual high profile events such as the ‘Orme Shield’ the ‘Cork Close’ and the Cork County underage tournaments and if that wasn’t enough the weekend of the 28th of September will see the ‘International Challenge Cup’ between the defending champions the Republic of Ireland, France and Northern Ireland played at the ‘Market House’ the home of Youghal CYMS.
Youghal CYMS will host this event on Friday the 27th and 28th of September and have just received some fantastic news in terms of club sponsorship as the ‘Quays Bar’ in Youghal have just agreed a two year sponsorship deal with Youghal CYMS, which will come as a welcome boost to the East Cork club considering the hosting of the ‘International Challenge Cup’ will be extremely expensive and with the league campaign and the Munster snooker club championships to be played in Killarney where Youghal play three five men sides in all tournaments.
Richenda Kelly and Seamus Curran of the Quays Bar felt that there involvement with the Youghal CYMS in terms of sponsorship was a very easy decision, Richenda told Evening Echo Sport “The Youghal CYMS is a fantastic association and they have been very good to us over the years, so this is a little pay back. I have a lifelong connection with the CYMS, my father Martin (Kelly) has always been a member and Brendan Cooney and the lads in the Youghal CYMS have always been very good friends”.
The Youghal CYMS is literally 20 meters away from their new sponsors and Seamus Curran said “We are more than happy to get involved with the CYMS and we follow them to Killarney every year and admire what they do for the town. They are a brilliant society who help younger lads to develop, plus thy have some very good players and I want to wish them the very best in all their competitions”.
Brendan Cooney of the Youghal CYMS who is the current Chairman of the CBSA said “It is great to get sponsorship from our near neighbours, Richenda, Seamus and all the Quays staff has always been very good to us and we thank them for their supports, it is deeply appreciated”.
There is a very worthwhile ‘3 Red Snooker Blitz’ (Best of 3 Frames) tournament to raise funds for five year old Abbey’s operation and without this operation she will never walk.
This competition will be held in the AOH on Sunday 22nd September, but some matches may be played in the previous days depending on entries.
The entry fee is just €10, if you’re interested in playing you can phone or text entry to Timmy Murphy at 0876316344 and the closing Date for entries is 6pm Wednesday 18th September with a starting time of 10am.
The new season is nearly upon us and the Crucible ‘A’ side will again be the team to beat in Division 1, as they go for three-in-a-row and it will take something special to beat the boys from Blarney Street.
The dark horses maybe this year could be the AOH ‘A’ side who look to have a good balance about them from one to five and Youghal CYMS ‘A’ who were undefeated in their league matches last year, but didn’t perform anywhere near their best in the final will have a few points to prove.
The second division was won last year by a very vibrant and young Crucible ‘B’ side making it a clean sweep for the Northside club and again this year they have a very good side. The Crucible ‘B’ side had the option to join the top division, but declined to do so, which was probable a wise decision. Youghal CYMS ‘C’ looked to have strengthend their side, bringing in Eric Ryan and Ger Swayne into the side and the Douglas ‘B’ side will always cause teams problems.
