Rebel Snooker

Dean Callanan of the Crucible snooker club is the Cork County ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) Under 19 champion where he saw off all the challengers at the ‘RIBSA Club of the Year’ the Crucible last Saturday afternoon.

The tournament is always a good indicator of talent for the future with nearly every winner previously going on to do exceptional things on the green baize.

Dean is a fine young player and now has his first major snooker title as Cork County champions, defeating Noel Landers of Youghal CYMS in the final by three frames to two frames, amazingly all games went to the black ball in a truly exciting final.

Meanwhile the CBSA ‘Garry McCarthy sponsored’ Cork snooker leagues are in full flow and after suffering defeat to Youghal CYMS ‘A’ a week previous the defending champions were in no mood to lose two in a row and revenge was in the air when the home side comfortably saw off the seasiders last Thursday evening.

Fermoy have moved into the fourth place qualifying spot in the CBSA Cork snooker league following a very convincing win in Blackpool against Shooters ‘A’. The North Cork club are now level on points with Youghal CYMS ‘B’ and look like they are coming through at the right time at the business end of the season, but it will have to something spectacular from Fermoy to hold on to that position when you consider their final two games are against the reigning champions the Crucible, whereas Youghal CYMS ‘B’ play Douglas ‘A’ and you would expect the east cork side to get something out of their two remaining matches, but as in all sports snooker is the very same and anything could happen.

This week’s games will be the last league games before the Christmas break and the final division one matches will be played on the 9th of January.

The three day festival of snooker starts on Friday the 24rd of January where the defending champions the Crucible get play underway in this five person team event, which definitely rates as the top team event on the Irish snooker calendar.

The final will be played on Sunday the 26th of January, where at that stage there will be five Munster representatives go forward to the Gleneagle Hotel ‘All Ireland Snooker Club Championships’ held at the same venue a week later on the weekend of the 30th of January through to the 2nd of February.

Wednesday evenings draw will as always be attended by clubs from all six counties within the Province and with possible six seeded sides in place within the early group stages, the luck of the draw could be vitally important.
