Rebel Snooker Week Three, Youghal CYMS ‘B’ take a big scalp

WEEK Three saw two major results in the Cork Snooker and Billiards Association (CBSA) league, with the Crucible playing their first match of the season, with extraordinary results winning 8-1 away to Douglas Snooker Club, plus Youghal CYMS ‘B’ defeated the AOH 8-4 at home in the Mall House.

Creg Casey, David Cassidy and fellow Crucible team players turned on the style to ruin the Douglas ‘A’ perfect start to the season. Karl Busteed took the only frame for the home side last Thursday evening in a match that signalled that last years Orme Sheild winners and league runners up mean business and with the services of Gary O’Sullivan look like a team that will take some beating.

Youghal’s second side in the league were very impressive last Wednesday night, where the record for the longest frame in league history a staggering 83 minutes was played between Stephen Kelly and Tim Murphy Jnr. Other than that Youghal were extremely impressive with Ian Hennessy taking the scalp of Shane O’Mahony and Trevor Flaherty looked on top form too. Chris Lyons got the better of Llyod Myers and all in all it was a very deserved victory, finished off by William Kelly.

Elsewhere the Youghal CYMS ‘A’ team went top of the league with an expected victory over their fellow Youghal CYMS ‘C’ club mates in an away fixture gaining three points. Brendan Cooney sat this one out, but along with Aaron Tobin, Ger Kelly, Derek Aherne, Adrian Landers and Christopher Cooney, Youghal CYMS ‘A’ look to be real challengers to the Crucible and honest candidates to go very close this year.

Congratulations to PJ Nolan on receiving his official World Snooker Coach badge and certificate after passing his intensive course in Sheffield. PJ is now the very first Republic of Ireland snooker coach to reach the very top level in the game. Nolan is a coach to Cork snooker Internationals, Greg Casey, David Cassidy, Ryan Cronin, Lee Walsh and Daniel O’Regan as well as working with many more Cork based players at the National Academy in Carlow for many years.

In under age snooker last weekend on Saturday and Sunday there was an under 18’s and under 21’s points event on in Limerick at the Venetian Snooker Club. There were players from Cork Clubs represented and Ryan Cronin from the Crucible was in brilliant for beating his club mate David Cassidy 3-2 on Saturday in the final of the under 19 event, and lost in Sunday’s final in the under 21 event. Aaron Tobin from Youghal CYMS was the winner of the plate event on Saturday.

Cork have shown in recent years that the under age section is the very best in the country and this year the National under 19 and under 21 championships will be held in Douglas in February 2012 and hopes are high for Cork victory in both events, but for now Cronin ranks number one in the country at under 19’s and ranked number 2 at under 21’s.
