WEEK Eight of the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) Cork snooker league threw up some predictable results and one sensational match between the AOH and the Crucible, where only a victory of the narrowest of margins kept the Crucible on a 100% win ratio.
The game between the AOH and the Crucible was played in the Morrison’s Island venue and there wasn’t much between the sides, but the victory for the Crucible will keep their hopes of going one better this year and winning the league on track.
Once again Greg Casey has shown tremendous form in recent weeks, with victory after victory and last weeks win over Shane O’Mahony at the AOH was a big scalp to take in the league. Shane is an outstanding player and it takes a lot to beat him on his own table and very few will do it this year, but Casey who is playing very well in the national senior ranking events too, is in top for this year in the CBSA Cork snooker league and he found a way to beat O’Mahony.
Equally impressive on the night was the AOH’s Lloyd Myers who had a very good three frames to nil victory over the Crucibles Garry O’Sullivan. Myers is always tough to beat and after a surprisingly poor run of recent results the AOH man came back last week with a bang.
David Cassidy who hasn’t been playing to his very best recently also recorded an impressive three frames to nil win over Donncha Breathnach. It is a much needed boost for Cassidy who is now an integral part of the Crucibles line up.
Kevin O’Leary was on target for the AOH with a two frames to one frame victory over Daniel O’Regan of the Crucible and yet again the Crucible’s Ryan Cronin was in winning form with a two frames to one frame victory over Sonny Stack.
The win for the Crucible means that the pressure was still on the Youghal CYMS ‘A’ side, who played away to Douglas ‘A’.
The league leaders Youghal were yet again foot perfect recording another win and in doing so they totted up another three valuable points. The eight frames to three frames victory for Youghal shows that the East Cork men are buzzing with confidence at the moment and will take some stopping in their current form.
Douglas ‘A’ played much better away to Youghal funnily enough and seem to be struggling at home, but in the current run of things, I predict they will be there or there a bout’s come the end of the league campaign, but they need to improve their play and at the moment the Youghal CYMS ‘B’ side look a real threat for that fourth place semi final position and only three frames at home is a poor return from a side that are capable of much better results.
Having said that Youghal CYMS ‘A deserve tremendous credit and have been playing spectacular snooker.
The addition of Tony Moore to the Douglas side this year has been a positive and he recorded a rare victory over Brendan Cooney, but the rest of the Youghal side were in devastating form. Aaron Tobin beat Derek O’Neill, Christopher Cooney won against Finbarr Wallace, Adrian Landers defeated Karl Busteed by two frames to one frame and Derek Aherne was in great form winning his match against Gerry O’Sullivan by three frames to nil.
Youghal’s ‘B’ side are also on a good run and after an eight -nil win in Douglas two week’s ago it was never going to be easy for the Douglas men to get anything out of their journey to East Cork and again it was a white wash as Youghal’s cue men were in dominant form.
