Rebel Snooker Week 11

Michael Hussey

Cork Under 16 Champion 2011 Aaron Tobin Youghal CYMS

THE Cork under 16 individual snooker championships were held last Sunday at Youghal CYMS and there was a very good entry with the Crucible, Douglas snooker club and the host club Youghal well represented in the magnificent surroundings of the Market House.

After some exciting snooker it was a bit of Youghal dominance throughout really in a club renowned for its strength at under age snooker came through with Youghal CYMS player Adam Fitzgerald beating fellow club man Noel Landers in the semi final.

Meanwhile the Crucibles Shane Hourihan met tournament favourite Aaron Tobin from Youghal CYMS in the other semi final. Tobin proved too good for Hourihan wining by two frames to nil.

In the final Tobin was just too good for Fitzgerald and went on to win the tournament without dropping a frame. Tobin a former National champion at under age level is truly a wonderful talent and hopefully soon he will be back in the green, white and orange of the Republic of Ireland team.

In regional snooker the West Section Intermediate snooker championships were held in the Crucible Snooker Club.

The final featured two players in terrific form at the moment, David Cassidy from the Crucible and Lloyd Myers from the AOH. Eventually Cassidy was victorious with a three frames to nil win. Sean Burns from the Crucible beat Derek Kiely from Youghal CYMS by three frames to two frames in the final of the plate.

Jimmy and James Hussey and his family must be complimented for the very warm welcome to everyone on the day and the hall itself was in fantastic shape. Hopefully with ranking tournaments finding their way back down south more and more Cork based players will come back to competitive snooker and even though Cork snooker is thriving at the moment the more that play the better, young and old alike.

Speaking of ranking events in Cork, Douglas snooker club will host the National Finals of the under 19’s and under and under 21’s and maybe more local cue-men will support further events. Also at Douglas snooker club ‘The Baby Lexie O’Riordan’ snooker tournament fund-raiser will be held in Douglas Snooker Club which will be held over the coming weeks.

The competition is organised by Karl and Martin Busteed and there is an appeal for support from anyone who wants to help by donating spot prizes. You can contact Douglas snooker club at 021-4891203 check it out on the Douglas Snooker Club Facebook page.

In the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) Cork league the Youghal CYMS ‘A’ side keep going with another win to keep their 100% record in tact with a win away at Douglas, meanwhile the Crucible also on a 100% perfect record of wins this year in the league had an away win at Youghal CYMS ‘B’ and these two sides look unbeatable at the moment, but something has to give tomorrow night when both sides meet in Youghal before the Christmas break.

This game should be a cracker with each clubs top players competing at the highest level in the national rankings, it is a very difficult match to call and it could go either way. Both Youghal CYMS and the Crucible are already qualified for the semi finals, the question now is, who will join them there? Youghal CYMS ‘B’, the AOH and Douglas ‘A’ will now face into a real dogfight for those remaining two spots.

The news that the ‘Munster Snooker Club Championships’ in Killarney have been brought forward by one week has not gone down very well with everyone involved in the game here in Cork, because it now clashes with an under 21, 19 and Masters event scheduled for the same weekend. The tournament is to be played the weekend of Friday the 20th, Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd of January. There will be an appeal to have this looked at and maybe RIBSA may solve the problem for Killarney by changing the date set for the ranking points events that are to be held that weekend.
