The 4th ladies event took place in Celbridge on 14th January. The quarter final lineup was the same as the previous tournament with Sandra Bryan taking on Treasa Keegan. having lost their previous 2 encounters, Sandra had the bit between her teeth today; and having moved to a new cue recently, she was a lot more sure of herself and ran out the winner today with a 3-1 score line, when Treasa went in off the black in the 4th frame.
Sandra went on to meet current number 2 Claire Mill in the semi-final, and after Claire took a 2-0 lead Sandra came back to make it 2-1 and looked sure to make it 2-2 and take it to a deciding frame, when Claire pulled off a very good clearance, getting a very nice nudge on the black to knock it over the pocket for an easy pot to take the frame and match.
The other semi-final seen the 2 Michelle’s battling it out yet again. Michelle French played her best snooker ever today and deserved the 1st frame having a decent lead all throughout the frame, having scored every time she came to the table. Michelle Sherwin had a nice 22 at the end of the frame to the green, and Michelle French let her nerves get to her a bit and let the number 1 back into the frame, which she managed to take on the pink.
Michelle Sherwin took the 2nd frame well, but the 3rd frame was very close again, and Michelle French potted a lovely blue to leave herself a really difficult pot on the pink which was almost tight to the back cushion, while the white was up near the middle pocket. Anyone else would have played a safety shot in this instance, but this kind of shot is what all the girls call a Michelle French special and her opponent fancied her to get it.
Michelle stood back for a second and composed herself before getting down and slotting the pink into the corner pocket without even touching the sides. She let a big whoop of joy, delighted to be the one to break the number 1’s long 2 and a half season run of not losing a frame in ranking events.
This seemed to spur on Michelle Sherwin and she ran away with the final frame, finishing the match off with a neat 40, just rattling the black for a total clearance. The 4th final of the year seen the same 2 players as the previous 3. Michelle took the 1st frame on the black and Claire looked certain to make it 1-1 with Michelle needing a snooker with the brown on the table. Michelle laid a good safety which Claire went into the centre off, and from there Michelle cleared the last 4 balls to take a 2-0 lead.
This seemed to take the wind out of Claire’s sails, she was very disappointed and Michelle upped her game a little in the final frame to take it handily enough and win the match 3-0. Big congrats also go to Michelle French who also won the skills event on the day with a score of 114 on the pink black line up.
Thank you once again to James, Phil and the rest of the staff at Celbridge for their kind hospitality on the day and the use of their fantastic facilities.
