‘WEEK 12’ in the ‘Cork Billiards and Snooker Association’ (CBSA) Cork snooker league’ showed that the Crucible are in dominant form, winning all of their ten league matches home and away this season, including back to back victories over the long time league leaders Youghal CYMS.
The latest victory came last Thursday evening when the Crucible had a four frame winning margin over their great rivals from East Cork, defending their 100% record in the league and even though both sides are already qualified for the league semi finals, the chances are that Youghal CYMS and the Crucible are most likely to meet in the 2012 final and these two victories may just give the Crucible the slightest of psychological edges if that happens. Greg Casey is 100% in the league so far undefeated which is a great record to hold in such a tough league.
The AOH all but secured qualification to the CBSA league semi finals with a great win over Douglas ‘A’ in the south side club last Tuesday night. The margin could not have been tighter with the AOH winning by just one frame, but that was enough to secure the away win and the three points. The AOH will play their last two league games against Douglas ‘B’ who lost out last Thursday night to Youghal CYMS ‘C’ at the Market House in Youghal.
I attended that match and to be fair Youghal looked comfortable throughout and deserved the two points and there is no doubt but the experience of already having played a year in the league has stood to Youghal CYMS ‘C’ team and this years experience will definitely stand to Douglas ‘B’.
Although Douglas ‘B’ lost I was impressed with a couple of their players, like Ed. Finn who won his game against a good player in Christopher Hennessy and Evan O’Leary who continues to improve.
From Youghal CYMS ‘C’ there was a great performance from Reece Roche who won his match by three frames to nil.
The CBSA Cork league now takes a break until the second of February due to the Gleneagle Hotel – Ladbrokes sponsored Munster and All Ireland Snooker Club Championships. Cork will have eight teams in Killarney this coming weekend when the Munster championships start on Friday. Youghal have the most representation with three sides, Douglas will have two teams and the the other three Cork sides are the Crucible, the AOH and Fermoy CYMS.
It has been twelve years since a Cork side have lifted the title in Killarney and looking on current form this could be Cork’s best chance in a while to bridge that twelve year gap with the Crucible flying in the league and at individual levels throughout the country, players like Greg Casey, David Cassidy and Ryan Cronin are winning and in some cases topping the RIBSA national rankings.
Youghal CYMS ‘A’ also have a very realistic chance of re-living that magic moment back in 2000 when they were the last Cork side to lift the cup. Best of luck to all the Cork sides travelling down to Kerry this weekend!
