AS the closing date approaches for the entries to the ‘Shooters Sponsored’ Cork Open snooker championship, the names are flying in for the seasons finale for snooker in the ‘Rebel County’.
Shooters are looking forward to welcoming people from every club in Cork and from any of the of the other counties, Nationwide.
There were some rumours that this would be an invitational tournament, those rumours were incorrect anyone who plays the game is welcome along to Shooters snooker club in Blackpool on Saturday the 28th of April to compete in this event.
John Paul Crowley, the owner of Shooters said “We have everything in place for the ‘Open’ and we are ready to welcome all the snooker fraternity along to our club for this very special occasion. I know it was back in the 1980’s when the last Cork open was held, its hard to believe that was over thirty years ago, so now that it is back we want it to be a very special re-introduction of the event and I am sure that the snooker will be of the highest quality. There will also be a plate arranged on the day, but we will let the players know about that on the day of the Open”.
The closing date for entry into the ‘2012 Shooters Cork Open’ is this Friday and entries should be submitted to John Paul Crowley, Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) Secretary Tim Murphy or CBSA Chairman Derek O’Neill as soon as possible.

The AOH made the trip to Belfast over Easter to compete in the National AOH Billiards and Snooker championships, held at the Clonard AOH club on the Falls Road.
The “Hibernian Cup” for the All-Ireland AOH Clubs Snooker Competition was first played for in 1938 and was won by Cork AOH. Cork AOH won a further seven times up to 1962 but 37 years lapsed before it was again won by Cork in 1999. Since then Cork have registered 10 more victories in 2001,2002,2003, 2004, 2006, 2009,2010, 2011, 2012 and will be hoping to make it five in a row next year when it will be hosted by Cork AOH.
The Cork AOH who of course were runners up in the CBSA Cork snooker league had a strong duo of snooker sides up North for the Easter weekend and the final was between the two Cork AOH sides, with eventually Shane O’Mahony, Lloyd Myers and Tim Murphy Jnr. finally coming out on top and securing ‘Four -in-a-row’ for the Rebel Cue-men.
This annual get together has a fantastic social side to it too and as well as meeting old friends, new friendships are struck up every year, all in all it will be nice to see the boys from Co. Derry and Co. Antrim on Leeside in 2013.
Finally for this week the ‘An Tostal’ cup for team billiards is well under way with the AOH victorious over Douglas in the quarter final and seeing off the Youghal CYMS ‘B’ billiards team in the semi final, to book their spot back in the final again.
The AOH are the defending champions and are littered with Internationals like Tim Murphy Snr. and Llyod Myers who is now part of the RIBSA Republic of Ireland squad.
The other half of the draw sees Shooters up against Youghal CYMS in their semi final. Shooters had a tricky match at the AOH on Morrison’s Island in the quarter final, but managed to hold out for the win and now play Youghal CYMS ‘A’ at the Market House in Youghal.
Youghal CYMS ‘A’ were runners up last year and will be out for revenge, but they will have to beat Shooters first if they are to get that opportunity.
